Vienna talks are best chance to save Syria from destruction: John Kerry

WASHINGTON: John Kerry said  “My friends, the challenge we face in Syria today is nothing less than to chart a course out of hell.” He said that Turkey, Saudi Arabia, U.S and Iran will be taking part in an international summit about the Syrian conflict for the first time. Kerry was due to leave for Vienna after his speech. "The challenge that we face in Syria today is nothing less than to chart a course out of hell," Kerry told an audience at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Kerry linked the Syria issue with the war on the Islamic State (IS) militant group. "Ultimately, to defeat Daesh ISIS, we have to end the war in Syria, and that is America's goal," Kerry said, using a term for the IS group based on its Arabic acronym. The Vienna discussions this week will also see  Iran's participation for the first time. Iran has confirmed that its Foreign Minister Javad Zarif will be attending the summit. He also said “Please do not accept the view of some that the Middle East must inevitably be divided along sectarian lines, especially between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.”
