U.S. Consul General inaugurates State-of-the-Art school

KARACHI: The US Consul General Grace Sheltonand Sindh Education Minister Jam Mahtab Hussain Dahar inaugurateda new school constructed in Sukkur through the support of theUnited States Agency for International Development (USAID) incooperation with the government of Sindh.

A US Consulate statement said that the new building for theGovernment High School Bhelar, in Sukkur District, was built withassistance from the $155 million USAID Sindh Basic EducationProgram (SBEP).

Sindh Secretary of Education Iqbal Durrani, communityleaders, teachers, students and parents were also present at theevent.

Consul General Shelton emphasized the U.S. Government'scommitment to supporting education in Pakistan.            `

The Sindh Basic Education Program is helping to improve thequality of teaching and increase equitable access to safelearning opportunities for children, especially girls.

Girl'seducation is particularly important as women play such a vitalrole in Pakistan's economy'.

Jam Mahtab Hussain Dahar, Sindh Minister for Education,expressed appreciation for USAID's SBEP and the U.S. Government'sstrong support in modernizing education in Sindh.

"We are very grateful to the United States for helping uswith education reforms, especially through this public-privatepartnership approach which is already helping the SchoolEducation and Literacy Department. These innovative solutions arehelping to improve school governance and quality of teaching", he said.

USAID's SBEP is constructing up to 106 modern schoolbuildings in eight districts of Sindh. Currently, construction of23 schools has already been completed.
