LAHORE - The district administration on Saturday called in Punjab Rangers after Islamists blocked several entrances to the city, calling for an end to a crackdown against Tehreek-e-Labbaik workers at Faizabad in Rawalpindi.
Protesters had blocked key routes including Mall Road, Ferozpur Road, Data Darbar and Shadara Saturday afternoon as they burnt vehicles across the city.
A spokesperson for the local Edhi ambulance said the service had been put on high alert and deployed to different areas across the city.
At Faizabad , police used tear gas and watercannon and fought running battles with stone-throwing Islamist activists, as they moved to clear a protest by the religious hard-liners who have blocked main routes into Islamabad for more than two weeks.
