PEMRA issues show cause notice to Geo News

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday issued a show cause notice to Geo News for airing an unverified news in its bulletin about Higher Education Commission (HEC).

PEMRA asked GEO News to respond to its notice by April 17, 2017 about a news concerning Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme and Higher Education Commission, said a press release.

GEO claimed that 1,800 students were given laptops twice and 2,500 students used fake identity cards.

PEMRA received a complaint from Higher Education Commission in which it stated that the allegations levelled in the GEO News report and the figures mentioned in it were totally baseless.

The HEC requested PEMRA to take strict action against the television channel for airing an unverified news and harming the reputation of the institution.

The HEC asked GEO to respond to the notice in seven days by April 17 for airing the wrong news.

Under sections 29 and 30 of the PEMRA law, it can impose a fine of Rs one million or can suspend and revoke licence of GEO News channel. (APP)
