NEW YORK - Iran attaches importance to good relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Iranian President Hasan Rouhani said in a meeting with Pakistan PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in New York, "The best way to strengthen regional security is the companionship of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and we are fully ready to cooperate with Pakistan to establish more security in Afghanistan."
Elsewhere, Rouhani underlined Tehran's preparedness to supply Pakistan with energy resources and cooperation with Pakistani investors in this sector, and said, "Cooperation between the two countries' banks is required for the development of economic relations."
In relevant remarks in August, a senior Iranian commander warned Pakistan to take practical measures to tighten its lax security control over the borders with Iran to prevent outlaws from crossing the border.
"We expect Pakistani security and law enforcement forces to confront drug smuggling groups and terrorist cells in addition to protect their borders more seriously," Commander of Iran's Sistan and Balouchestan Border Guards Brigadier General Saeed Komeili said.
He, meantime, said that border guards in Sistan and Balouchestan managed to destroy a major drug gang and seize some 1.7 tons of various illegal drugs in a recent operation.
The smugglers' large convey was stopped by Iranian border guards before entering security zone in the Iran-Pakistan border.
"The smugglers who had tried to enter border's security zone ignoring the border guards warnings, opened fire to the Iranian forces but finally fled into the Pakistan's territories after they failed to confront an hour-long fire exchange," General Komeili said, reiterating that the smugglers also left behind drugs consignment before escaping into the Pakistan's soil.
Sistan and Balouchestan is the vastest Province of Iran which shares borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
