Pakistan invites ISPs to setup offices in country to control social media abuse

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has assured that no restrictions are being imposed on the social media, but it can also not be left unbridled.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said that the government believes in freedom of expression but derogatory comments against the military and the judiciary will never be allowed through anonymous social media posts.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said constitution also bars to malign military and judiciary but some unscrupulous elements are involved in this heinous act to achieve vested interests.
He lamented PTI for threatening to take to streets if any action is taken against elements spreading hatred on the social media. He said action will be taken against hate-mongers irrespective of their political affiliations.
He said Federal Investigation Agency has been ordered to probe the matter and so far 27 social media accounts have been identified for spreading hatred against the Army and the judiciary and uploading blasphemous content against sacred personalities.
He said real identity of eight of them have been traced, while only six persons have been interviewed. He said the rest is yet to be investigated. He said neither any arrest has been made nor anyone harassed by the law enforcement agencies.
The Minister said the government is also planning to invite internet service providers to set up their offices in Pakistan, which will greatly help stop misuse of social media.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said implementation of the recommendations made by the Dawn Leaks committee has started. He said the government is also working on a code of conduct for the media in consultation with media organizations.
