Pakistan exports fall, widening the trade deficit

ISLAMABAD (APP): The trade deficit of the country fell by 13.39 to $2.315 billion in September 2016 from $2.673 billion in August, 2016 as the country's exports decreased by 6.94 per cent while the imports declined by 10.92 per cent.

The country's exports fell to $1.543 billion in September from $1.658 billion in August while the imports decreased from $4.331 billion in August to $3.858 billion in September.

Similarly on year-on-year basis, the trade deficit increased by 33.43 per cent as the exports declined by 10.6 per cent while imports went up by 11.47 per cent in September 2016 as compared to same month of preceding year.

According to figures released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the trade deficit reached to $2.315 billion in September, 2016 from $1.735 billion in September 2015.

Similarly the country's exports during first quarter of current fiscal year fell by 8.98 per cent to $4.681 billion from $5.143 billion in same period of last year.

The imports however rose to $11.746 billion in July-September 2016-17 from $10.611 billion in first three months of the year 2015-16 thus showing an increase of 10.7 per cent.

The trade deficit expanded by 29.21 per cent during the period under review as it went up to $7.065 billion in July-September (2016-17) as against the trade deficit of $5.468 billion in same period of last year.
