LAHORE - Constitution allows freedom of speech but at the same time it bars from lambasting institutions of judiciary and army. This was stated by Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Asif Gen Ghafoor during an exclusive interview with Roznama Dunya on Thursday.
Gen Ghafoor warned against ‘selective implementation’ of Constitution. “Legal action under Constitutional boundary would be taken against those who would try to tarnish the image of army. We can’t succeed without support of masses”, ISPR DG said.
“Army has good working coordination with incumbent Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. It would be in greater interest of country if army and federal govt cope with challenges together”, Gen Ghafoor maintained.
Gen Ghafoor cleared that army works under Constitutional boundaries.
While responding to a question on visit of Saudi Arabia by civil-military top brass, ISPR DG said officials are finalizing dates for the high-level visit.
“Pakistan enjoys historic relations based on shared Islamic values with Saudi Arabia and Kingdom desires Pakistan Army’s support against the backdrop of current situation prevailing in Middle East”, Gen Ghafoor revealed.
On a question about role in Saudi-Iran rapprochement, Gen Ghafoor replied that Pakistan wants to act as mediator for restoring peace in war-torn ME. He said steps are being taken in bid to avoid escalations and avert direct conflict in destabilized region.
“Army is rendering unrivalled sacrifices for country in ongoing war on terror, hence no such step would be taken through which sacrifices can go in vain”, vowed Gen Ghafoor.
