Lahore High Court verdict on IG Punjab Police appointment

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered the government for the appointment of permanent Inspector General (IG) of Police in Punjab within a month and called a compliance report of the court orders by June 16.

A bench of the LHC was hearing a petition against appointment of an acting IG Police in the province. The government had last month appointed Muhammad Usman Khattak as police chief of the province for 90 days.

The bench ruled that currently no such law exist that permits appointment of an IG on interim basis.

Lawyer to Punjab government apprised the bench that the provincial police have issued an ordinance for amendments in Police order 2002 under which the appointment of an IG would be exceptional [not require implementation on the police order].
