Indian Justice system has failed us: Father of deceased Delhi gang rape girl

NEW DLEHI: The father of a female student killed in the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape attacked the “failure” of Indian justice on Monday, after the Supreme Court rejected a last-minute bid to stop her most brutal assailant walking free. India’s Supreme Court said there was “nothing in the law” to justify extending the incarceration of Jyoti Singh’s youngest killer, who was 17 at the time of the attack, and has served his sentence. The court's rejection of an appeal lodged late on Sunday to overturn his release prompted fury among the victim’s parents and thousands of supporters, for whom Singh’s death has come to symbolise the plight of India’s many victims of sexual violence. "There are no words to describe our disappointment," said her father Badrinath Singh. "We don't understand all these laws. We only know that the system has failed us.” ”They have basically handed young criminals a licence that says before the age of 18 you can rape girls, do whatever you want, because our laws do not have any provisions to punish you," said Singh’s mother, Asha Devi.
