NEW DELHI: A massive fire at a military depot killed at least 17 soldiers including 2 officers and injured as many as 19 people in Pulgaon near Nagpur, India.
Thousands of families around the incident area are being evacuated to avoid any further loss.
PM Narendra Modi said “he was pained by loss of lives,” and tweeted that his “thoughts are with the bereaved families.”
The reason behind the incident is still unknown but authorities are probing.
Firefighters are trying to control the situation.
This is the largest incident ever hit Indian armed forces since 2013 when an Indian vessel totally exploded with a blast and left 18 soldiers died who were present on the board.
In 2010, an army depot also fired in Kolkata which destroyed 150 tonnes of ammunition and explosives.
A fire at Bharatpur ammunition depot in India also claimed two lives and a loss of $90 million in 2000.
