There is “huge trust deficit” between Pakistan and US: Kh Asif

LONDON: Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif has on Wednesday said that there is a “huge trust deficit” between Pakistan and the US over the conflict in Afghanistan.
In his interview with British Broadcasting Company on Wednesday, he blamed the “ineptitude” of American and international forces in Afghanistan for not ending the conflict.
The minister dismissed the possibility of economic sanctions being leveled against Pakistan by the US.
Pakistan only received “a trickle” of economic assistance from the US, he said, adding that we do not get any military hardware from them.
We are not like in the past when we were their proxy.
“ Having said that there is a willingness on both sides to bridge this [trust] deficit.”
Commenting on the US concerns regarding Afghanistan, Asif insisted that there are no safe havens of terrorists in Pakistan. “They do not need our territory. Almost 40% of Afghan territory is now under the direct control of the Taliban.”
The foreign minister said that the US should also look behind what they have done in Afghanistan during the last 16 years.
