Gulzar Ahmed Wani, a Kashmiri PhD scholar released from jail after 16 years on fake terrorism charges

NEW DELHI - Former Aligarh Muslim University scholar from occupied Kashmir, Gulzar Ahmed Wani was absolved of all charges by an Indian court framed against him 16 years ago in the Sabarmati Express blast in 2000.
An Uttar Pradesh court acquitted Gulzar Ahmed Wani of the charge of having allegedly orchestrated the train blast in 2000 that claimed nine lives.
Wani, who was arrested by Delhi Police in 2001, is a resident of Peeparkari area of Srinagar and was lodged in a jail in Lucknow. He was 28 years old then. The blast was carried out on the eve of Independence Day near Kanpur when the train was on its way from Muzaffarpur to Ahmedabad.
The blast is believed to be an act of extremist Hindus to as part of their long-drawn strategy to malign Muslims.
Wani was pursuing PhD in Arabic from the AMU when he was arrested from Delhi on July 30, 2001. Meanwhile, Gulzar Ahmad Wani’s father Ghulam Mohammad Wani, in a media interview said that his family underwent a painful journey throughout the past 16 years. However, he termed son’s acquittal in a terror case after 16 years as a victory of truth.
