General Raheel retirement may be good for democracy but bad for stability of Pakistan: Washington Post
WASHINGTON: The most powerful man in Pakistan, General Raheel Sharif announced that he will step down as army chief when his term expires in November this year.

 

A positive step by Gen. Raheel Sharif is good for democracy but creates new uncertainty about the battle against Islamist militants and Taliban.

 

General Raheel Sharif said on Twitter through his spokesman Lt.Gen. Asim Bajwa, that “I don’t believe in extensions and will retire on due date, the fight against terrorism will continue with full vigor and resolve”.

 

“Raheel Sharif announcement could have major implications for Pakistan’s posture towards Islamist extremist group as well as effort to encourage peace talks between Afghanistan’s government and the Taliban insurgency”,   Washington post claimed.

 

In supervision of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif Pakistan achieved great success against terrorism, Pakistan Army started operation Zarb-e-Azab and National Action under the supervision of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif.
