GCC Foreign Ministers to meet in Riyadh to discuss Saudi-Iran tension

RIYADH: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will hold an extraordinary meeting on Saturday to discuss the rising tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran, GCC said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Foreign ministers of the GCC States will hold an extraordinary meeting in Riyadh on Saturday ... to discuss the repercussions of the attack on the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and the Saudi consulate in the Iranian city of Mashhad," GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said in a statement.
Iranians protesting Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al Nimr stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran early on Sunday.
In response,Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran and ordered the Iranian diplomatic mission in Riyadh to leave the country within 48 hours.
Several other gulf and Arab states including Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Kuwait followed suit and either cut or downgraded diplomatic ties.
Official from the UN, US, Turkey and EU called on both sides to ease the tension. (Gulf News)
