FATA merger with KPK to be made immediately: President FATA Lawyers

PESHAWAR: (APP) Rahim Shah, President FATA Lawyers' Forum has welcomed the suggestion of FATA Reforms Committee about extension of jurisdiction of superior courts to tribal areas but expressed concern over the proposed timeline for merger of FATA in KP by committee which suggested five years for this transition.

This timeframe means that there will be no representation of people of FATA in the Provincial Assembly in the 2018 election.

If the government wants, then transition can take place before the elections in 2018, he expressed these views while addressing a press conference organized by Centre for Governance and Public Accountability (CGPA) at Peshawar Press Club on Friday.

FATA absorption in KPK: Tribal elders reject proposal

Members from FATA Lawyers Forum, Thakra Qabailay Khwenday (TQK) and FATA students organization attended. The press conference was intended to highlight the concerns of different stakeholders on the report of FATA Reforms Committee.

Shahida Shah, President of Takrha Qabailay Khwenday (TQK), showed concern on lack of representation of people of FATA in FATA Reforms Committee and held reservations on those who were consulted in agencies by the Committee. She stated that women of FATA do not agree with the Riwaj Act proposed by the reforms committee.

She was of the view that the reforms suggested shall be implemented before the next elections in 2018. Quotas shall be increased in Senate and assemblies. Malik system and PA system is not at all accepted, she added.

Shoukat Aziz of FATA Students Organization said that the sustainability of the FATA reforms is dependent on the amendment of Article 247 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Merger of FATA with KPK: PHCBA recommendations

Imran Khan, Programm Coordinator CGPA, stated that the FATA Reforms process should start from the amendment or abolition of Article 246 and 247 of the Constitution. Only then the reforms will have a sound ground and lasting effect, he added.

He stated that the time-frame proposed for the merger to take place means that FCR will be intact in FATA and no representation will be given to people of FATA in the 2018 elections.
