Editorial: 10 points how Indian diplomacy failed against Pakistan in talks with US Secretary of State

NEW DELHI -  US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson who had arrived in India after visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan met with the Indian senior leadership in New Delhi. 

However to the utter disappointment of Indian leadership US Secretary of State speech did not come up at all to the expectations of the Indian leadership and media which was much boosted of ahead of Tillerson visit. Except for a statement that US will not tolerate any terrorist safe heavens in the region there was nothing for India.

The following points reveal the Indian diplomatic failure against Pakistan vis a vis relations with US.

- US Secretary of State didn't  mention any issue of cross border terrorism from Pakistan into India.

-The issue of terrorism in Kashmir was not at all touched by US Secretary.

-US did not talk of any sanctions against Pakistan as expected and lobbied by India.

-The list of terrorists handed over to Pakistan did not include name of Hafiz Saeed, whom India claim to be one of the biggest terrorist on the surface of earth.

-There was no mention of name of Hafiz Masood Azhar in the talks or the terrorist lists.

-Secretary of State discussed Kashmir issue with Pakistan as against wishes of India.

-Before arrival Tillerson had talked of negotiations and talks between Pakistan and India which India denies and considers it as only bilateral issue.

-Tillerson expressed desire to work with Pakistan against Indian wishes.

-There was no focus on India in Tillerson talks with Pakistan and only Haqqani network was the focus of talks.

-US insisted India to focus against China and US wanted to pitch India against China.

-US has imposed strict restrictions on the H1 B Visa which has affected the India most and Tillerson did not make any promises in this regard.

After meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj he said that his country won't tolerate terror safe havens anywhere in the world.

The top-ranking US official said, ''India and USA stand shoulder to shoulder against terror.''

Hailing the bilateral ties between the two nations, Tillerson said that both India and the US are ''natural allies'' and have common concerns.

Rex Tillerson further stated that India is crucial to USA-Afghanistan strategy and backed New Delhi as 'a leader in the Indian sub-continent'.

Shedding light about his recent visit to Pakistan, Tillerson said that he had a very open and frank exchange with Pakistan leaders in Islamabad on Tuesday.

We conveyed to Pakistan the expectations we have with them, Tillerson said, in a joint press conference with EAM Sushma Swaraj.

He stated that the US wants to work with Pakistan in a positive way as this will be in their interest in longer term.

Speaking on her turn, EAM Sushma Swaraj said, ''President Donald Trump's policy on terrorism can only succeed when Pakistan takes action on terror groups.''

Swaraj, while informing that the India-USA-Afghanistan trilateral meeting will be held in December, also highlighted the contribution made by the Indians working in the USA.

The EAM also expressed India's concerns over the new H1B visa rules put in place by the Trump administration.

Rex Tillerson had arrived here on Tuesday from Pakistan. During his stay here, Rex Tillersaon is due to meet the top leadership of the country and discuss ways to further strengthen the Indo-US strategic partnership in key areas.

Tillerson is the second high-ranking official of the Donald Trump Administration to visit India in the last two months.

Ahead of Tillerson's three-day visit, the External Affairs Ministry had said that there will be detailed discussions on further strengthening of Indo-US partnership.

The US Secretary of State, who paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan, had said the Trump administration was of the view that India can play a positive role in creating a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.
