Dr. Asim Hussain released after 13 months custody

KARACHI: Former state minister for petroleum and close aide of ex-president Asif Ali Zardari Dr. Asim Hussain was released from Rangers custody.

Hussain has been released after a period of 13 months in Rangers custody. He is accompanied by his lawyers and family members.

The PPP leader was shifted to Ziauddin Hospital located at Karachi’s posh area of Clifton.

A local Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday issued release orders for former Petroleum Adviser Dr. Asim Hussain, hours after he was granted bail in two cases.

Dr. Asim had submitted his Canadian passport in the ATC after which the court issued release orders.

Sindh High Court (SHC) granted bail to Dr. Asim Hussain in cases of Rs.479 billion corruption.

Referee judge of the SHC, Justice Aftab Gorar issued the orders over two corruption references filed against Dr. Asim by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

One of the references accused Dr Asim of Rs.462 billion embezzlement while the other of Rs.17 billion graft.

Accepting bail plea on medical grounds, the judge directed Dr. Asim to file security bonds of Rs.5 million.

Last month, Sindh High Court’s Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah appointed Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar as referee judge to decide the bail applications of Dr Asim Hussain. He was appointed after a split verdict by an SHC division bench on the bail issue.

With today’s development, Dr. Asim acquired bail in all cases he was facing in different court.

He was detained on August 26 by NAB and Rangers in multiple cases of corruption and terror financing.
