Braid chopping left womenfolk in distress: Mirwaiz forum

ISLAMABAD: The Hurriyat forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressing serious concern over the unabated incidents of braid chopping coupled with theft of gold jewelry and cash has said that the puppet regime has failed to nab culprits and stop the incidents.
The forum spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “So far, people of Kashmir have only witnessed tall claims and hollow assurances on the part of police without any tangible progress in apprehending the elements involved in these incidents,” KMS reported.
The spokesman said the height of the oppression is that when people try to raise their voice against such incidents, which have left the population especially the womenfolk in great distress and a state of fear, police use force including bullets, pellets and teargas on the peaceful protestors.
He said the use of brutal force on the peaceful protestors speaks volumes of the intolerance of the authorities towards public outcry.
He added that such incidents were being perpetrated to terrorize the people of Kashmir to relinquish their genuine and legitimate struggle.
The spokesman said that in the wake of rising incidents of braid cutting in Kashmir, many elderly figures, prominent citizens and social activists visited the residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and shared their concern and anxiety with him.
The delegations apprised the Mirwaiz about the level of fear created by some elements who also threw stones at the rooftops of houses and at their entry gates in the dead of the night resulting in the panic among residents.
The spokesman said the Kashmiris’ liberation struggle has reached a stage where certain civil society groups of India also have realized the importance of resolving the long-pending Kashmir dispute and are advocating its immediate settlement for durable peace in the South Asian region.
He, however, said it is an irony that the present dispensation at New Delhi continues with its rigid and stubborn approach towards Kashmir and wants to follow its traditional iron fist policy rather than taking steps for resolving the dispute.
Reacting to the recent assertions of India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the spokesman said the fact remains that the bitterness between India and Pakistan has remained mainly because of the Kashmir dispute.
He said it is evident that unless the Kashmir conflict is resolved keeping in view the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, peace-building will remain elusive.
Meanwhile, the forum leader and the President of Jammu and Kashmir Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen, Maulana Masroor Abbas, in a statement said that the incidents of braid chopping had created a sense of fear among the womenfolk. He also deplored the indifference of the puppet rulers towards such happenings.
