Ashraf Ghani - Narendra Modi ask regional countries to eliminate terrorist safe heavens

NEW DELHI - President Ashraf Ghani returned to Kabul on Tuesday evening after meeting with Indian officials in New Delhi including Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Ghani also met with India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. 

While in New Delhi Ghani also inaugurated the new conference halls of the Afghan embassy, said the statement. 

According to the presidential palace, Ghani and Modi discussed bilateral ties, expanding trade and transit agreements, cooperation, elections, and peace and stability in the region. 

Modi expressed deep sorrow regarding the recent deadly attacks in Afghanistan and said India and Indian people are with Afghanistan, read the statement. 

Ghani and Modi also discussed the new US strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia and said the implementation of the strategy will help  build peace and stability in Afghanistan and in the region. 

The statement said Ghani and Modi reviewed Afghanistan-India strategic cooperation and said the results of their cooperation are positive and they will continue working together for shared goals and peace. 

Modi meanwhile said India supports the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process and emphasized that the regional countries should fight terrorism and eliminate terrorist safe havens, the statement said. 

Modi and Ghani also discussed the air corridor between Afghanistan and India and agreed to work on a mechanism to find good markets for Afghan goods, especially for agricultural produce in India. 

Ghani also said India as one of the biggest democracies has rich experiences in terms of holding transparent elections and urged Modi to share their experiences with Afghans. According to the statement, they agreed that the electoral commissions of both countries should cooperate and exchange views in this regard.
