After Iraq now US wants to disintegrate Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian politician warned against Washington’s continued hostilities toward Damascus and said the US is seeking to break up eastern and northeastern parts of the war-torn country.

Speaking at a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud on Tuesday, Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, hailed the resistance of the Syrian people against foreign-backed Takfiri terrorism.

“The Syrian nation and government headed by (President) Bashar al-Assad have proved that they are the pillar of resistance in the region,” he said.

“We are confident that the Syrian nation and government are capable of countering the enemies and foreign threat and protect Syria’s establishment,” Velayati added.

He further warned that the US government is seeking to partition eastern and northeastern parts of Syria as well as Iraq through its Zionist stooges in the region, stressing, however, that they will get nowhere.

The Syrian diplomat, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, saying Ayatollah Khamenei has played a major role in the victories of the resistance front in the region.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
