Pakistanis spend Rs 554 billion on donations annually

PESHAWAR: (APP) Pakistan is one of the countries where huge amount of Rs 554 billion is being donated by people and spent annually for welfare of masses and assistance of destitute people, it was informed during a seminar here Tuesday.
Chief Executive Pakistan Peace Collective (PPC) project of Federal Ministry of Information and Broadcast Dr Bushra Taskin addressing the awareness seminar here at University of Peshawar, urged masses to carefully give their donations to only registered or well-known charity bodies so that the donation might not utilized by terrorists' entities or activities.
The awareness seminar was organized by Law Department of University of Peshawar to sensitize people about the misuse of donations and role of youth for positive change in the society.
She said that donation of huge money for charity purpose by Pakistanis is evidence of the fact that they loved humanity, adding that at present awareness camp is continued across Pakistan including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
She said it is joint responsibility of masses to play their role for positive change in the society along with the government and informed NACTA on helpline number 1717 in case some suspicious persons come and seek money in the name of donations.
Former Program Manager UNODCP for Afghanistan Jahanzaib Khan addressing the seminar said that donations are provided in every religion of the world, while Islam emphasizes on Zakat as part of religious obligation.
He said that the government should have to make the charity collection system well-coordinated so that the deserving could be benefitted from it.
Project Director Khurram Idrees hailed the fact that 95 percent Pakistanis provide huge amount annually under the head of charity but deplored that the people don't know the spending of their donations.
The seminar was attended by teaching faculty of Peshawar University, officers and officials of Civil Administration, Police, Nazim Peshawar district, representatives of business community, students and media.
