Pakistan Air Force clinches overall Inter-Services Sports Gala trophy

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Air Force clinched the overall trophy of the Inter-Services Sports Gala-2017 concluded here at PAF Officer Mess Tennis Courts on Monday.Lt.

General Malik Zafar Iqbal, Director General Joint Staff, Headquarter, Chaklala was the chief guest on this occasion.

Base Commander Peshawar Air Commodore Imtiaz Sattar, former World Champion Qamar Zaman, Director Sports PAF Sports Board Control Committee Group Captain Amir Nawaz, Sqn. Ldr. Saif Ur Rehman, other high military and civil officials, players of various teams from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy and host Pakistan Air Force were also present.

Pakistan Air Force won two gold medal and two silver by taking overall first position in the four events sports gala by winning Squash and Tennis gold medal and took runners-up trophies and silver medals in basketball and cricket.

Pakistan Army won gold medal in Basketball and Navy took gold medal in Cricket while Army got silver medal in squash and tennis and overall remained second while Navy got third position despite winning the gold medal in Cricket.

In the Squash final played at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex Pakistan Air Force defeated Pakistan Army by 5-1. In the first singles Waqas Mehboob of PAF recorded victory against Bilal Zakir of Pakistan Army by 3-0, the score was 11-9, 11-5 and 11-9.

In the second singles Singles Saddam of Army beat Mehran Javed of PAF in a thrilling 3-2 battle lasted for 62 minutes, the score was 13-11, 11-5, 9-11, 9-11 and 11-7. Both Saddam and Mehran provided great thrill for the sitting spectators.It was the third singles wherein former Asian Junior Champion Safeer Ullah shocked top seeded player of Pakistan Army Raees Khan in another marathon match.

The score was 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-6. Safeer Ullah gave tough resistance to Raees and did not give much time to Raees to settle down.

The singles was also a key for PAF to win the gold medal.In the fourth singles Waqas Mehboob beat Sadda by 3-0, the score was 11-8, 11-8 and 11-8 while in the last and decisive singles Mehran Javed beat Raees Khan in straight sets, the score was 11-5, 11-3 and 11-7.

Mehran Javed, who was also member of the Pakistan team that won World Junior Tea For PAF title, did not give much room to Raees to strike back and thus marched into victory at 3-0.In the Basketball event Pakistan Army shocked Pakistan Air Force by 95-84. The final provided great thrilling for the sitting spectators.

For Pakistan Army Niamat Ullah, Aman, Atif and Rashad played well and contributed valuable points in their team victory. For PAF P. Shehzad, Zohaib, Ahmad Jan and Akhtar played well.In the Tennis final PAF beat Pakistan Army by 5-0. PAF Shehzad, Shahid, Imtiaz recorded victories against Lt.

Raahim, Major Rizwan and Major Abbas while in the doubles Shehzad and Shahid of PAF beat Lt. Raahim and Major Rizwan.In the Cricket final Pakistan Navy defeated PAF by 121 runs. Pakistan Navy won the toss and  elected to bat first by setting up 237 runs for the loss of 10 wickets.

For Navy middle order Babar Agha hammered a cracking 67 runs off 72 balls with seven boundaries and a six. Imran Ali hit another half-century 56 runs off 34 balls with five boundaries and three sixes and Abdul Saad made 36 runs. Gul Zaman got three wickets, Amir got two wickets and Sajid took two wickets while Naseer, Zafar got one wicket.In reply, PAF bowled out for 116 runs in 27.2 overs.

Only Sajid made 63 runs off 52 balls with five boundaries and three sixes, Asif Shehzad scored 29 runs and none of the other batsmen could cross the double figures. For Navy Nasir Awais was the top wicket takers who claimed six wickets, Moazam Malik got two wickets while Ilyas and Fawad got one wicket.

At the end, the chief guest gave away gold, silver and bronze medals and the winners and runner-up trophies. A total of 150 players took part in the Gala organized by PAF Sports Board Control Committee.
