Back to square: US- Afghanistan urge Pakistan to play role in reconciliation process

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's strong response to US allegations has started to bear fruit as both Washington and Kabul have started to realise the importance of Pakistan in Afghanistan peace process.

However Pakistan has insisted that the Trump administration gives a clear signal of change in its new policy before it enters into further talks with the US.

Pakistan’s civil and military leadership had expressed serious reservations on the new US policy and Washington was informed that the do-more policy would not be accepted.

“If the US wants to maintain its relation with Pakistan, it will have to adopt a balanced policy,” a source privy to the matter stated.

The delegation level talks between the two countries would resume soon. The prime minister and the foreign minister will soon leave for New York to participate in the UN session. Sideline meetings with US authorities are also expected there.

Diplomatic channels are still working between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Islamabad has told Kabul that only a reconciliation process can bring stable peace in the war-torn country.

Both “Afghanistan and the US are insisting that Pakistan play its role in the reconciliation process”.
