"Human eyes speak", says new scientific research

BEIJING (Xinhua) -- If you thought the saying "the eyes are the window to the soul" is just a metaphor, think again. According to a report in American science magazine "Scientific American," it could be true.

Researches have shown that people's eyes may be a powerful indication to what's going on in their minds, particularly the changes in the size of the pupil.

Changes in pupil size reflect how aroused we are, how relevant and interesting what we see is, and are related to information processing generally, the report said.

Previous studies have shown that females' pupils dilated on viewing semi-nude men and vice versa. Women's pupils also responded to images of mothers holding babies.

The eyes can tell whether we are lying or telling the truth, which means the American TV series "Lie to Me" is based on science.

The series is about the hero solving crimes by interpreting body language and microexpressions.

Researches have also suggested that pupil size reflects the strength of feelings, while not indicating if those feelings are positive or negative.
