ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar discussed important matters during a meeting in Lahore on Saturday.

The prime minister also held meetings with Punjab Chief Secretary Maj (retd) Azam Suleman and IGP Punjab Shoaib Dastgir. He congratulated the newly appointed high-ranking officers.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan, SAPM on Accountability Shahzad Akbar and Zulfi Bukhari were also present.

Addressing the provincial bureaucracy and senior police officers, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that examples of country’s governance, bureaucracy and policies were given in the 60s. “The country is passing through a difficult phase today and economic stability is vital for it. The economy is strengthening and I congratulate my economic team,” he said.

The prime minister said that appointments have been made on merit in the bureaucracy and against other designations. “We have freed the officers from every kind of political pressure during our tenure. You will have to do work on merit. You are not bound to do unfair work of any political personality,” he said.

Imran Khan said that competent bureaucracy has an important role in the progress of the country. “There is need to improve law and order and governance system for economic progress,” he said.

He said that they will have to change the old mindset in the New Pakistan as the old system cannot work today. “Your top duty is to serve the masses. We will protect the service tenure of the officers and try to improve the life of the common man,” he said.

The prime minister urged the officers to defend the poor against the powerful. “You have legal authority, but this power should only be used to serve the masses and improve their lives,” he said.
