UN expert calls for ICC to probe decades of crimes in Myanmar

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee has urged the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute those responsible for possible war crimes and crime against humanity in Myanmar.

In an oral briefing to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, Special Rapporteur Yanghee Lee underscored that accountability for crimes committed in Myanmar is the only way to end the long-term cycle of violence.

She said I strongly recommend the persons allegedly responsible for the violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law be investigated and prosecuted by the ICC or a credible mechanism.
