Strategic exports control briefing on Nuclear weapons control 

LAHORE: (APP) The Strategic Export Control Division-IV (SECD-IV) is working on export controls on goods, technologies and equipment related to the nuclear and biological weapons and connected systems.

This was stated by Zafar Ali, director general, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while addressing researchers, faculty and scholars at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) at a seminar, on Wednesday.

While briefing the audience about Export Control Act through a presentation, he said that Acts are formulated not only to facilitate the stakeholders but also to provide safeguards to the national security and foreign policy objectives and fulfil international obligations as a responsible nuclear weapons state.

He informed the participants about the salient elements of the Export Control Act 2009 including control over export, re-export, trans-shipment, transit of goods, technologies, materials, prohibition of diverse controlled goods, wide jurisdiction, comprehensive control list, licensing and penalties.

The DG said that the department was engaged in an outreach programme to create awareness among the public about the functions of the department and encourage all lawful activities.

Dean Faculty of Chemical Engineering Prof Dr Nadeem Feroze told the audience on the occasion that it was a useful initiative to educate the related people about the export of controlled goods for strengthening the approach of non-proliferation in Pakistan.

He said that the UET Lahore was ready to cooperate and coordinate with SECD-IV in this connection.

At the end, Dr Nadeem Feroze presented a shield to DG SECD-IV Zafar Ali in the presence of Dean Faculty of Natural Science, Humanities & Islamic Studies Prof Dr Shahid Rafique, Registrar Muhammad Asif and heads of different departments.
