Triple Talaq bill introduced in Indian Parliament
NEW DELHI - In India, government has introduced a bill in parliament aimed at prosecuting Muslim men who divorce their wives through triple talaq at a time, which women complain violate their right to equality. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said only a law can explicitly ban triple talaq, we have to enforce legal procedures to provide allowance and protect custody of children. The bill, if approved, would make the practice a non-bailable offense with a possible three-year jail term. India is one of the few countries where the practice of instant divorce is prevailing while some Muslim groups consider it as wrong. Some people are of the view that the law should be reviewed by Muslim community itself.
