ISLAMABAD: Amnesty International says Pakistan has secured historic advances for the rights of people in the tribal areas with the passage of a new constitutional amendment that breaks with disgraceful laws rooted in the colonial era.
Deputy Director for South Asia at Amnesty International, Omar Waraich in a statement issued today (Friday) said this is an historic moment that ends more than a century and a half of colonial-era draconian laws for people in the tribal areas.
He said the tribal people can finally enjoy the same constitutional rights as other Pakistanis.
He said earlier on 5th of this month, the ruling and opposition parties came together to pass one of the most progressive pieces of legislation in the world, Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act.
