UN budget cuts a ‘step in right direction’, says US

New York: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has said that a US$285million reduction in the United Nations (UN) core budget is “a big step in the right direction.”

The General Assembly 2018-2019 budget is $5.396 billion, just under the $5.4 billion sought by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The United States reportedly negotiated more than $285 million in cuts, according to Sputnik.

“We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked,” Haley said, adding that “inefficiency and overspending” at the world body were “well known.”
