AJK announces to launch state-wide spring tree plantation drive from February 8

MIRPUR (AJK): Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has announced to launch spring tree plantation drive in the State from February 8, it was officially announced.

A high level meeting, chaired by AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan on Thursday decided to observe the current year as the year of tree plantation in the state. It said that people of all walks of life would be involved in spring tree plantation drive to achieve the set targets.

“Ministers will mark the tree plantation campaign by planting a sapling in their respective constituencies. Police and other departments would be allotted different enclosures for planting the trees. Saplings would be distributed as per houses in major cities. Agriculture department would plant gardens of fruit trees in 29 earmarked regions during the plantation drive. Educational institutions, especially colleges and Universities would also be made part of this drive.

Development authorities, municipal corporations and municipal committees would select the places for tree plantation. Saplings would also be planted at the sites connecting AJK to Pakistan and at inter-district highways.

Provision of free saplings and plants to the concerned institutions would be ensured for this purpose. Agriculture department would distribute 5 lakh saplings of fruit trees and would involve all the concerned institutions, lawyers, students, members of civil society and traders in tree plantation drive.

Tourists would be provided saplings in rest houses who would plant them with their names. All the departments of the State would inform the Prime Minister Secretariat on their progress of planting the saplings on daily basis” decided the meeting.

Addressing the meeting Prime Minister Farooq Haider said that modern mechanism would be followed during the spring tree plantation drive this year adding that he would make a formal announcement in this regard on February 6.

He directed all administrators of town committees and heads of departments to take active part in the tree plantation drive to ensure its success. He also urged all departments to ensure full cooperate with forests department in this connection.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Forests Dr. Shehla Waqar, Secretary Agriculture Raja Tariq Masood, director general tourism Irshad Pirzada and other officers.
