Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak passed away at the age of 91

ISLAMABAD - Former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak has passed away at the age of 91.

Mubarak, who ruled for almost three decades in Egypt, stepped down after a popular revolution in 2011, has died.

According to state media, he underwent a surgery and passed away weeks after that.

Mubarak was Egypt's fourth president who assumed charges in 1981 until his ouster after the prominent Arab Spring revolution in 2011.

He has also remained in jail for years following the uprising, but was freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges.

His harsh stance on security enabled him to maintain the peace treaty with Israel.

Under his reign, Egypt remained a key United States ally in the region - receiving $1.3bn a year in US military aid by 2011.

Mubarak is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and his sons, Gamal and Alaa.
