US airstrike kills five militants in Afghanistan

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Local officials on Saturday said five militants were killed and four civilians wounded in a US airstrike in the Charkh district of central Logar province.

Salim Saleh, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that American forces conducted the airstrike on a house in the Pangram area of the district on Friday night.

He said five militants were killed and two others wounded in the overnight raid, which also led to the destruction of some weapons and ammunition belonging to the insurgents.

The Taliban were in a civilian house when they came under bombardment that damaged six nearby houses, the spokesman said, adding that civilians suffered no casualties in the incident.Syed Baqir, a resident of the area, claimed many militants were killed in the bombardment.

But he said four civilians were also wounded in the attack.The Taliban have not yet commented on the raid.Also on Saturday morning, a shopkeeper was killed inside his shop in the capital of southern Ghazni province. A security official, who wished to go unnamed, said the shopkeeper was killed with a silent gun.

The attacker managed to flee after the attack -- the third targeted killing in Ghazni City just over the last three days.APP/AFP
