Shafi's stance contradicts with UAE officials on Gulf Steel Mills agreement: NAB IO

ISLAMABAD: The NAB’s Investigation Officer (IO) Muhammad Kamran informed the accountability court that there was a contradiction between the statement of Tariq Shafi and reply of UAE, regarding the sale agreements of Gulf Steel Mills.

Accountability Court Judge Arshad Malik conducted hearing on Flagship Investment reference against Sharif family filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

As the hearing commenced, the defense lawyer Khawaja Haris continued his cross-examining with NAB’s IO Muhammad Kamran.
The NAB IO informed the court that Shafi was never served any notice to make him part of NAB investigation as he had already recorded his statement to the joint investigation team (JIT).

He said that Tariq Shafi’s statement regarding the sale agreement of Gulf Steel Mills shares was contradicting with the response of UAE following the mutual legal assistance (MLA). However, the NAB didn’t serve notice to Shafi to inquire about this contradiction, he said.

During the hearing, the accountability court witnessed the exchange of heated remarks between Nawaz Sharif’s counsel and National Accountability Bureau (NAB)’s prosecutor during hearing of Flagship Investment reference.

Haris alleged the NAB prosecutor for intervening his cross-examining and requested the court to send NAB IO out of court room for some time.

NAB Prosecutor Sardar Muzafar Abbasi replied that the defense wanted the IO to give statement in line with its desires. The IO wouldn’t leave the court room, he added.

The defense said that they would abandon the proceedings if NAB IO didn’t go outside. At this, the court ordered the NAB IO to leave the room for a short time.

Later, the court adjourned hearing of the case till Friday, wherein the defense would continue his cross-examination with NAB IO.
