Kashmiri Muslims united against forces dividing Ummah: Mirwaiz

ISLAMABAD: Prominent Kashmiri leader and Chairman Hurriyat Forum Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said that the Muslims living in Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK) are united against all the forces attempting to divide the Ummah in one way or the other.

“Kashmiri Muslims have always stood for unity. We have always lived together in harmony. However, there is a considerable amount of effort being made to disturb this unity,” Iranian daily Tehran Times quoted him as saying in an interview.

Mirwaiz pointed out that a conspiracy was being hatched to dilute Islamic charter of Jammu and Kashmir “That we need to resist.”
He said Kashmiris were united and condemning those elements wanting to divide Muslims., adding “We want to send across a very clear message that the entire Muslim community stands united and any move to hurt the sentiments of Muslims in general and any section in particular is condemnable and will be opposed tooth and nail.”

The Kashmiri leader spoke about the significance of Islamic unity, challenges for Muslim unity in Kashmir, highlighting Imam Khomeini’s message of unity and brotherhood, terming it “more relevant today than ever before.”
He praised the efforts of Ayatollah Khomeini for ensuring unity among people of Iran and sending giving a strong and clear message to the Ummah that the time had come to eschew little differences and focus on commonalities “bringing us together as a whole.”

He underlined the need for shunning petty issues of discontent and exhibiting greater unity among all sects, urging Muslim countries to show the real meaning of Islamic teachings and values.
Mirwaiz said Muslims in IoK, irrespective of sectarian divide, were bound in exemplary brother hood and always respected each other’s religious faiths and events.

“We cannot rule out the fact that there are certain elements working on the ground who want to drive a wedge between communities. We have seen time and again that anti-Muslim remarks, propaganda, anti-Islam films have been scripted in the US, in the West and in other parts of the world. So there is a deliberate attempt being made to create tension between communities,” he said.

In context of IoK, Mirwaiz said, the problem was complicated because of political uncertainty as there was no system under which Ulema Councils could be formed and given a say in policy making.
