Chinese Consulate staff absolutely safe: Karachi Police Chief

KARACHI: Karachi Police Chief, Dr Amir A Shaikh on Friday confirmed that all the members of Chinese consulate staff, including few Pakistanis, are absolutely safe and unhurt.
Talking to media personnel at the site of firing incident in Clifton block four here, he said "I can safely claim that the staff of the Chinese consulate is absolutely safe and remain unhurt as the attackers could not manage to enter the premises".
Sharing initial details of the incident, he said the situation has been brought under control with three of the four
attackers killed during an retaliatory action by law enforcers.
"There was a group of arsonists who reached the gates of Chinese consulate and attempted to make a forced entry, however, were strictly resisted by security guards, policemen and rangers on duty," he said.
Dr Shaikh in most categorical terms said the attackers could not manage to enter into the consulate premises and three of them were killed during an exchange of fire while fourth on driving seat, of the care used to carry them to the site, was arrested in senior condition.
Injuries caused to the fourth arsonist was attributed to explosives placed in the vehicle.
To a query, he said two police officers on duty at the sensitive site lost their lives while defending the honour of the country and precious human lives.
He confirmed that a security guard of private company hired by the consulate sustained serious injuries and is being treated at JPMC.
Earlier, Deputy Inspector General, Karachi Police (South), Javed Aslam Odho informed the media personnel that an explosion was heard in the area, declared as red zone where stringent security arrangements were ensured round the clock.
"Since this is a highly sensitive area hence immediate action was taken and the attempt was thwarted," he said.
