Four-member medical team reaches Adiala jail for Nawaz's check-up

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) formed on Monday a four-member medical board to check the health of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is presently incarcerated in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail for corruption.
Dr Aijaz Qadeer is chairman of the medical board which comprises PIMS Head of Cardiology Dr Naeem Malik, Medical Specialist Dr Shajee Siddiqui, Dr Sohail Tanvir and Dr Mashood.
The medical board along with a mobile laboratory has reached the Adiala jail.
Meanwhile, Nawaz has been shifted from his cell to the hospital facility in the prison for check-up, sources told.
The caretaker government wants the medical board to cross check Major General (retd) Dr Azhar Mehmood Kayani's, head of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC), report on Nawaz's health, the sources said.
Kayani conducted the first check-up of the former premier late Sundya night.
"Nawaz wants to be shifted to RIC but the government wants to shift him to PIMS," the sources further said and added that the PIMS' VIP ward is being prepared for the former premier.
A day earlier, sources said Nawaz was experiencing numerous medical issues due to dehydration.
A team of health officials on Sunday carried out the former premier's medical check-up at Central Jail Rawalpindi.
Jail sources said the ex-premier was suffering from dehydration, which led to multiple health problems.
The summer heat, jail sources added, has led to dehydration.
The jail superintendent also reportedly penned a letter to PIMS — Islamabad's largest public hospital — to set up a medical board in light of the former PM's health.
Nawaz, who flew from London to Lahore alongside his daughter, Maryam Nawaz on July 13, was arrested on arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, flown to Islamabad via a helicopter, and shifted to jail, where he is serving the sentence awarded to him in the Avenfield properties case along with his daughter and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said the nation is concerned regarding Nawaz’s medical condition in jail.
“PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif had written letters to caretaker premier and Punjab chief minister to appeal to provide basic amenities to Nawaz,” Marriyum said.
The PML-N leader added, “Jail authorities deprived Nawaz of basic facilities.”
“Nawaz’s condition worsened due to denial of facilities,” she added.
