EU Parliamentarians urge for greater support to Pakistan on counter terrorism (foreign policy

BRUSSELS: The Socialists and Democrats group of the European parliament stressed the need for greater support and cooperation to help Pakistan fight against terrorism in its meeting with Frederica Morgheni, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The S&D group, a centre-left political group, comprises 190 members of the European Parliament and the second largest, with 191 members from all 28 EU countries.

“Meeting with High Representative Morgheni was extremely important in light of the recent developments in the area of security and defence and in view of our group's positioning,” said the spokesperson of the group.

Afzal khan, MEP, Vice-Chair Subcommittee on Security and Defence, urged Morgheni to increase cooperation with Pakistan and the wider Islamic world to fight terrorism. Khan said that the EU must play a visible role in helping Muslim countries against radicalisation and terrorism.

The S&D delegation included important members including Vice-President European Parliament Ioan Mircea Pașcu, S&D Vice-President Victor Boştinaru, Knut, Fleckenstein, Eugen Freund, Tonino Picula, Ton Beumer, Doriano Dragoni, Sergiu-Nicolae Vintila, Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann.

High Representative Morgheni had also earlier issued a statement condemning the recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

“We express our condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured. We are determined to stand by Pakistan in fighting all forms of terrorism and will continue to strengthen our cooperation with Pakistan in this regard,” she said.
