WWF and DHA initiate Mangroves Plantation drive

KARACHI: (APP) The DHA in collaboration with WWF initiated an extensive mangroves plantation drive, the first of its kind initiative, to demonstrate support for environmental awareness and its protection on the eve of Earth Day 2016.

A formal ceremony was held at Defence Authority Creek Club to mark the occasion, a DHA official said here on Friday.

Commander 5 Corps Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar was the chief guest of the function. Vice President Emeritus WWF Brig (R) Mukhtar Ahmed, Brig Zubair Ahmed, Administrator DHA, DG WWF Agha Hammad Naqi Khan, PD & Conservator Mangroves, Government of Sindh Agha Tahir Hussain also attended the ceremony. Corps Commander said that promoting plantation, greenery and natural environment was essential for development of a vibrant and healthy society.

He appreciated the efforts of DHA in collaboration with WWF and Forest Department Govt of Sindh for rehabilitating the depleted mangroves in the area.

DG WWF and Conservator Mangroves, Government of Sindh in their address highlighted the significance of protection and preservation of environment for a safe and harmonious living environment.

They said that mangroves play a pivotal role in maintaining marine ecosystem and help protect shoreline from natural devastations and floods.

A large number of nature enthusiasts, guests and DHA/WWF officials attended the ceremony. The unique environmental campaign with the motto "Let's Pay Back to Mother Earth" will bring a realization of importance of protecting environment to the masses.
