Former pm Nawaz Sharif disqualified as PML-N president

ISLAMABAD:After his disqualification from premiership, Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

The decision was announced by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar that heard 17 petitions against the recently-passed Elections Act 2017.

The court also nullified the section 203 of the Elections Act 2017.

In its short order, the court remarked that only a person fulfilling the sections 62 and 63 of the Constitution can become the party president.

With the announcement of judgment, Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified from the party presidentship. All steps taken by Nawaz Sharif as party president have also been nullified.

The court also ruled that the ban will be implemented from the day Nawaz Sharif was disqualified

On the order of the SC, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) removed the name of Nawaz Sharif as party president. A notification in this regard has been issued.

The ECP also ordered to summon a meeting of the Central Working Committee and elect the acting president within seven days. It also asked the party secretary general to elect the president in 45 days and inform the commission.

The verdict has put a question mark on the issuance of the Senate tickets to the party candidates.APP
