Heavy gunfire reported outside Saudi Royal Palace with rumours of attempted coup: Foreign media

RIYADH - Heavy gunfire has reportedly broken out near the royal palace in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh, The mirror has reported.

Wildly conflicting social media reports tonight claim bullets were fired as part of an attempted coup, but it was also claimed a toy drone flew to close to a security checkpoint and was shot down.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia are yet to comment on reports.

Wall Street Journal reporter Margherita Stancati tweeted: "No coup attempt in Riyadh. A toy drone/plane got too close too the King’s palace and was shot down."

Saudi journalist Awad Alfayadh posted: "A toy drone flownaround a restricted ireas in Riyadh close to Securety check point. They had to shot it down according to the lows."

Among frenzied claims circulating on social media was that King Salman was evacuated to a military bunker in the city.

Unverified videos have been posted on social media, allegedly near the palace in Riyadh, in which it appears gunfire can be heard.

It is unknown if there have been any casualties.
