Diamer Bhasha Dam: CJP Justice Saqib Nisar gives a new proposal

ISLAMABAD - Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has put forward a new proposal of forming a council for the Diamer Bhasha Dam.

He has said the construction of water reservoirs is a collective responsibility of the nation.

Addressing the participants during first session of the second day of International Symposium on Creating a Water Secure Pakistan here on Saturday, he said all stakeholders should move forward to achieve this goal.

He said there should be a council regarding Diamar Bhasha Dam. He said WAPDA is an important institution regarding water storage but this responsibility should not be laid merely on it. The Chief Justice said that availability of water needs to be ensured as Pakistan is facing water scarcity.

A communiqué issued after the symposium says that an effective mechanism should be formed for the management of new water reservoirs. It says that an institutional framework should be formed to address the environmental issue. Water conservation should be ensured through a regulatory mechanism.

It further said that economic issues for construction of water reservoirs should be the top priority of the government. The communiqué says that awareness should be created through education in order to deal with the challenges of water scarcity. At the end of the first session shields were distributed among the speakers.
