Transgender's Rights in Pakistan: PTI seizes initiative

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken the initiative to secure the rights of transgender people. The party submitted a bill in Punjab Assembly for protection of the suppressed community.

PTI’s MPA Doctor Nosheen Hamid proposed the bill in the provincial assembly. She aims to conduct legislation for the rights of third gender in the province.

The bill suggests imposing Rs 1 lac fine and two-year term in jail over discriminatory behavior towards transgender persons. It also proposes to declare forced begging illegal such that anyone who forces the transgenders to beg would be fined Rs 30,000 and serve 2 months in prison.

Moreover, it was recommended in the bill to found welfare committees at provincial level for the rights of transgender people. The bill proposes that special certification should be issued for the community members which would make it easy for identification.

The bill aims to campaign for the third gender which includes provision of education and basic rights. It was suggested that rehabilitation centers should be made across Punjab for the welfare of transgenders
