*ISLAMABAD - PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan faces the worst setback as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided not to support Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate for the post of president of the country.*
The PPP has unilaterally decided to nominate Aitzaz Ahsan for the coveted post as head of state as the tenure of incumbent president Mamnoon Hussain ends next month and elections will be held on September 4.
However, the nomination of prominent lawyer has created further cracks in the opposition. The PML-N has refused to accept Ahsan as the presidential candidate stating the PPP did not consult them or any opposition parties before making the decision.
The party is also disgrutled as the PPP abstained from voting for PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif for prime minister, and also did not support Hamza Shehbaz as chief minister Punjab.
On the contrary the PML-N has voted for PPP leader Khursheed Shah as Speaker of the National Assembly. The agreemeent was made during a multi-parties conference held by the opposition.
The party is mulling to nominate its own candidate for president claiming it has the right being the largest opposition party. It has also expressed reservations on Aitzaz Ahsan who has criticised PML-N leadership particularly Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.
The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has already nominated Arif Alvi for the post.
