Naqeeb murder: Close aide of Rao Anwar arrested

KARACHI: DSP Qamar Ahmed, a close aide of absconding Rao Anwar, the former SSP Malir, has been arrested for involvement in extrajudicial killing of Waziristan’s Naqeebullah Mehsud.

According to Counterterrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh Police, Qamar Ahmed was taken into custody for recording his statement; however, he was arrested owing to contradictions in his statement.

The CTD officials said the police officer is involved in the killing of Naqeeullah Mehsud as he was present at the site of police encounter.

A team of investigators headed by Additional IG Sindh Aftab Pathan grilled former Malir Investigations SP Malik Altaf Sarwar and DSP Qamar Ahmed in connection with Naqeeb’s death.

DSP Qamar was detained as he failed to satisfy the interrogators and the SP was allowed to leave, provided he furnishes details of each police encounter during Anwar’s tenure.

Police have also arrested at least nine cops in connection with the fake encounter led by Rao Anwar. The latest arrests mounted the number of arrests to 11.

The killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud, an aspiring fashion model, sparked countrywide protests last month. The protest still continues in parts of the country, particularly outside the Islamabad Press Club where hundreds of people belonging to various Pashtun communities are staging sit-ins.APP/AFP
