Accountability Court to hear supplementary references on Feb 22: notification

ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court will hear the supplementary references in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments on February 22, National Accountability Court (NAB) issued a written notification on Tuesday.

According to the written order, Judge Muhammed Bashir of Accountability Court will conduct the hearing of the two references.

According to the judicial order, the counsel of Nawaz Sharif sought time to review the supplementary references. The court said it will hear the arguments and objections by defence lawyer.

A week ago, the NAB filed two supplementary references in Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship investments with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hasan and Hussain Nawaz nominated in the references by NAB Rawalpindi, according to the notification.

The NAB notification said the two references were filed after chairman, retired justice Javed Iqbal approved them in light of fresh evidence.

Before filing the references, NAB summoned Nawaz Sharif to record his statements before the Accountability Court in the references. But, he did not appear before the court. Afterwards, the NAB filed the references without the his statement.

It should be pertinent to note here that former Panama Papers JIT member Irfan Mangi heads NAB Rawalpindi that called Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif family is facing three corruption references including Avenfield Properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments with charges of money laundering, tax evasion and hiding offshore assets. A supplementary reference pertaining to their Avenfield Properties has already been filed.

In yet another development, the NAB requested the interior ministry to place names of the former premier, Maryam Nawaz and her husband, Mohammad Safdar, on the Exit Control List (ECL), said the NAB spokesperson Nawazish Ali Khan while talking to media.

A day earlier, Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar had requested an accountability court to grant them two-week exemption from attending any hearings.APP/AFP
