SCO Expansion: Geopolitical and Strategic Implication

ISLAMABAD: (APP) SCO Expansion: Geopolitical and Strategic Implication

Senator Sehar Kamran Wednesday said that Pakistan's inclusion in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would be beneficial for the entire region.

"SCO's expansion and Pakistan's inclusion in the organization will prove to be 'mutually beneficial,' and Pakistan will act as a 'zipper' for the entire region," she said in her welcome remarks at a roundtable discussion.

The forum titled 'SCO Expansion: Geopolitical and Strategic Implication' was organized by the Centre for Pakistan and Gulf Studies (CPGS) here at the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS), said a press release.

"Pakistan's ideal location enables it to become a source for regional economic integration among the SCO member states," Senator Sehar Kamran, who was also President of CPGS, said.

The discussion, which was the third in the series under CPGS' project "Regional Integration: Road to Peace and Prosperity,"  focused on the geopolitical and strategic implications of the SCO's expansion in the region.

She emphasized that the expansion would enable the organization to deter extra-regional pressures.

With Pakistan's permanent membership and vast experience in the context, new measures and joint ventures can also be taken for countering violent extremism in the region, she added.

Pakistan, Sehar said, had achieved marvelous success in the internationally acclaimed "operation Zarb-e-Azb' and could share valuable expertise with the SCO member states.

National Security Adviser Naseer Khan Janjua commended CPGS and Senator Sehar Kamran for organizing a timely roundtable conference.

He said Pakistan would help make the organization a more effective and vibrant body.

Among others, Ambassador of Turkmenistan Atadjan Movlamov, Senator Afrasiab Khattak, representatives from National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), diplomats, academicians and media men participated in the discussion.
