RIYADH - US secretary of state Mike Pomeo met with King Salman of Saudi Arabia over the deteriorating ties between the two allies on the issue of missing Saudi journalist.
Amid rising tensions between the two countries over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia to hold talks with King Salman.
Tensions increased in both the countries after Khashoggi mysteriously disappeared two weeks ago during a visit to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Turkish officials have said authorities believe that the US resident and Washington Post contributor was murdered and his body was removed from the consulate.
These allegations were denied by Saudi Arabia. During his talks with US President Donald Trump, King Salman told him that the Saudis are working closely with Turkey on the case. Trump also promised ‘severe punishment’ if the country was found to be involved in the journalist’s ‘disappearance’ and ‘death’.
