MOSCOW: Russian and Tajikistan militaries hold massive exercises near Afghanistan border which will last for 6 days.
The motive behind these exercises is to practice defending against IS invasions which are present in Afghanistan.
Tajikistan’s Ministry of Defence official said “Joint groups of paratroop forces from Tajikistan and Russia are being airlifted to possible points of incursions by terrorist groups on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.”
He claimed that 50,000 troops from Tajikistan and 2,000 from Russia will participate in drills which will be placed along with 1,000 km of Tajik-Afghan border.
He said “The maneuvers involve around a thousand armored vehicles, artillery, and 32 combat and transport aircraft.”
TASS news agency claimed that the troops will practice to destroy bases, ammunition depots of the enemy and to access in mountainous terrain with the help of paratrooper task force.
The drills came after a week when a group of armed militants entered in Tajikistan and killed a Tajik officer during border crossing from Afghanistan to Tajikistan.
Recently, Chinese and Pakistani military officials also visited Tajikistan to expand their military cooperation to counter terrorism.
